Course Summary

This ‘live’ virtual workshop is for psychologists and other mental health professionals to develop their knowledge and skills in mental health assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with Intellectual Disability.

Up to 50% of Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disability experience mental-ill health. This 1-day live 'virtual' workshop aims to up-skill practicing mental health professionals with the knowledge, skills and confidence in mental health assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with Intellectual Disability. Dr Ratcliffe utilises her signature style of bringing the latest research and evidence-based practice to life with real-life clinical and case examples, combined with a range of reflection and interactive activities to keep the learner interested and engaged. Participant skills' practice, combined with evidence-based clinical tools for mental health assessment and treatment in this population, will help mental health professionals to have increased knowledge, skills and confidence to provide inclusive mental health care to children and adolescents with ID.

1-day Live Virtual Workshop Overview

Mental Health Professionals will increase their knowledge, skills and confidence in Mental Health Assessment and Treatment for Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disability. Topics include:

  • Introduction to intellectual disability (including update on DSM-5-TR criteria, released March 18th 2022!)

  • The prevalence and increased risk of mental ill-health in children and adolescents with intellectual disability (including the range of mental health symptoms/disorders including anxiety, depression, obsessive disorders, trauma, psychosis and behavioural disorders)

  • Mental health assessment for children and adolescents with intellectual disability (includes framework for comprehensive assessment, including adjustments for ID and use of the DM-ID-2 Workbook and other assessment tools)

  • Mental health treatments, including CBT for children and adolescents with intellectual disability (includes review of range of existing and new evidence-based programs and resources, as well as evidence-based adjustments to practice for ID)

  • How to apply key adaptations for psychological treatment to meet the learning needs of children and adolescents with intellectual disability and their clinical application

  • Q & A with Dr Belinda Ratcliffe

  • Certificate of participation on completion of quiz within 1 month of the workshop

  • 5 hours of CPD

  • This course is NOT recorded as it is designed to be delivered as a live, online and interactive course.

Dr Belinda Ratcliffe

Dr. Belinda Ratcliffe, lead author of the award-winning Westmead Feelings Program 1 for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder is a highly qualified Principal Clinical Psychologist and Researcher with a PhD in Autism Spectrum Disorder from the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney. Belinda has received multiple prizes in recognition of her work. Dr. Ratcliffe is a former Lecturer in Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology at Western Sydney University, leads a team of Clinicians in South Sydney at 'The Emotions Clinic Australia', dedicated to making a lasting impact in Autism, Intellectual Disability and Mental Health. Dr Ratcliffe provides training, clinical supervision and consultancy across Australia to a range of Health, Disability and Education Government, Non-government and Private agencies, including the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Mater Hospital in Brisbane and NSW Department of Education and Communities.
