Course Summary

Are you a mental health or other caring / health professional who supports those impacted by significant loss?

This 1-day live online workshop empowers health professionals, to learn and understand how to apply the new integrated process model (IPM) of grief (Guldin & Leget, 2024) to loss and grief in health and mental health care. Grief can arise from events like bereavement, major life transitions, illness, disability, aquired brain injury and trauma and can have both acute and ongoing impacts. Developed and led by Dr. Belinda Ratcliffe (Phd, Clinical Psychologist), this course elegantly threads contemporary compassion-focused approaches onto the 5-dimentional IPM - and thereby translates cutting-edge research into a simple, accessible model, including practical tools that can be immediately applied in both professional and personal contexts. Through a blend of teaching and experiential activities, you'll gain new knowledge, skills and competence in supporting others—and yourself—with compassion-focused tools through the complex and unique journey of loss and grief.

Foundations in Loss & Grief: An integrated compassion-focused approach for Health Professionals. A 1-day 'Live/online Workshop'

Participants will increase their knowledge, skills and confidence via teaching, and a range of experiential activites in the following areas:

  • Learn contemporary approaches to loss and grief - with a focus on the new Integrated Process Model (IPM; Guldin & Leget, 2024) including the many types of 'loss' and the range of potential impacts.

  • Modul 1- Physical Dimension: In this module, participants will examine the body’s responses to life-changing experiences, focusing on the nervous system and 'tricky' brain-based reactions. You will explore how compassion supports balance and resilience, and practice techniques to stabilize the body. Guided strategies will help you learn how to cultivate calm, enhance safety, and develop a personalised self-care plan.

  • Module 2 - Emotional Dimension. Here, we explore emotional responses to life-changing experiences. You will gain practical tools and strategies to better understand and manage your emotions. Using the ‘3 Circles’ model, you’ll learn techniques to reduce distress and enhance soothing through compassionate imagery and visualization, promoting emotional balance and resilience.

  • Module 3 - Cognitive Dimension. In this module, participants explore the cognitive dimension of loss and grief. Drawing on the dual processing model of grief, and assumptive world theory - we learn how to understand the impact of loss and grief on the mind, and cultivate a compassionate mind. Through guided experiential activities, participants will learn how to engage with thoughts in a structured, step-by-step process. These practices aim to enhance self-awareness, foster self-compassion, and nurture a kinder, more supportive relationship with the mind during loss.

  • Module 4 - Social Dimension In this module, participants will examine the social impact of loss & grief experiences and explore concepts such as attachment, connection, and insights from continuing bonds theory. You will learn to intentionally cultivate compassion through loving-kindness practices and micro-acts of compassion, fostering meaningful relationships and a deeper sense of belonging.

  • Module 5 - The spiritual/existential dimension of the IPM addresses loss and grief by seeking meaning, faith, hope, trust, resonance, and transcendence. This module explores ways to connect with meaning and purpose, encompassing both Big P (life’s overarching purpose) and little p (day-to-day purpose). Participants will engage in reflection on core values and what matters most, fostering gratitude, awe and wonder and gain a deeper sense of understanding and connection.

  • All participants will receieve 30 days access to the live recording

  • 8 hours of CPD

  • Certificate of participation on completion of quiz within 1 month of the workshop
